A cord of wood is a stack that measures 4’ x 4’ x 8’--so there’s nowhere near that much in each buckle! But the neatly stacked cross-sectional ashwood pieces are reminiscent of a scaled-up stack of firewood. A similar look can also be seen in “cordwood construction”, which is an obscure but still practiced building technique using logs and mortar. The voids in this case are filled with a hardened resin.
